What is a Blog

Asking questionEven though the term “blog” has been around since April 1999, there are still some readers and Bloggers that don’t understand what blog means. Therefore, after reading this post, you should have a firm understanding of what a blog is; you’ll also learn about the different types of blogs people create.

What is a Blog? According to Wikipedia, “A blog (a contraction of the term “web log”) is a type of website, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order.”

To understand what a blog is, think of a blog as a diary or journal people use to keep records of their daily activities – A blog is basically a website (weblog) where individuals or bloggers post or upload images, videos, articles or posts to their blogs daily, weekly or as often as they choose.

There are many different types of blogs including political, personal, finance, writing, design, reviews, games, gossip, news and more. This blog you’re reading now is a personal blog by Peter A. Brown. That’s me. It’s a blog that provides useful information for beginners looking for tips and ideas on blogging and home based business opportunities. Let’s move on.

In most cases, blogs are displayed in reverse- chronological order; this means the most recent post is usually on top of the page. However, the blogger also has the option to keep the most recent posts at the bottom of the page.

Facts about blogs
One of the cool things about blogs is that it allows interactivity with the readers. Readers often have the opportunity to leave comments, and participate in polls on the blogs (website) they visit.

With the click of a mouse, visitors could also share their favorite blogs with friends and relatives on any social networking sites.

Conclusion
Two great examples of successful blogs are The Huffington Post which is a political blog, and Problogger.net which is a personal blog. These are two different blogs that attract different audience, yet they both have huge readership and a large following.

To increase your chances of running a successful blog, try not to focus on what is popular now, but more on the topics or things you’re passionate and knowledgeable about. Blogging can also be a lot of fun once you know what you’re doing.
